In response to the article here:
For God’s not dead arguing we seen it before isn’t totally a good argument. We see alot of plots before. Look at everything is a remix. All Creativity is always inspired or rehashed from something, everything except for God. Why are we also suddenly having new and better marvel movies? We see those before too.
It’s that making a good remix though.
For me personally God’s not dead is horrible because it stereotypes. The Christians are the heroes and Atheists are terrible College teachers. It bores me to death because these films are irrational and Judgmental about atheists. Anything doing the creation verse Evolution thing, they just want to add a ton of drama and stupidity for nothing. I almost wanted to cover my ears at Spirit west Coast this year, because God’s Not Dead was basically a giant Ad for God’s Not Dead by the Newsboys. Newsboys was Playing at Spirit West Coast. At the end of the movies it was, hey let’s all go to the Newsboys Concert and so didn’t like that ad. Another is that I saw an intelligent review of this movie that, all the words and sayings are terribly misquoted. I can’t remember which but you can find it online somewhere.
My experience with philosophy classes, they never ever start with the argument God’s not dead. That is a huge claim and argument, even for atheistic class. They start with thinking yourself and how to think properly. Teach you the basics, and just basically write a lot of essays.
But maybe in the case of Creation vs evolution, I don’t want to see any more of these movies. They are basically the same thing. Just cookie cuttered Christians, and cookie Cutter Atheist. It’s great that Christians were portray what we were supposed to do. But the atheist seem to be always Villainous and some sort of evil looming in them. They took that evil and exaggerated tenfold, to point where God’s Not Dead made me want to roll my eyes.
The purpose of creation vs. evolution movies is somehow praise God at the end of the movie he exists, but in the end you’re really actually being so Judgmental to atheists, that you lose what you as a Christian was supposed to do in the first place. Your job is to preach the Gospel, but I don’t know if it means constant Apologetics down the throat.
Noah, there is nothing needed to be talk about. At this point, Aroknofsky didn’t use the bible at all and use his own graphic novel, used a lot of Apocrypha, and one person claims its gnostic in nature. Its great use of filming and acting, but story, just take it as entertainment.
The only one out of all of them I really like was actually Heaven’s For Real. Of course near death experiences can be totally impossible. But, we can’t say for sure if it wasn’t a dream, or what it was. No one is sure for near death experiences. In fact if you paid attention at the end of the movie, they specifically give the message I don’t know if what my son saw was real, but here on earth we see heaven through our family, meaning he might accept the beliefs but he is still skeptical. I think Heaven is for real was a step in the right direction but it isn’t the best Christian movie yet but better then God’s not Dead or Noah. They at least made the family not cookie cuttered Christians, and it made me get a giggle. The laugh was warmhearted then any Christian movie live action Ive felt. It something I want to take away from.
Heaven’s for real is actually based on a real life family. The girl who paints is a real life person and you buy that exact painting for a lot of money. If you read, her experience with painting is what converted her parent’s to Christianity. There is 90 mins from heaven.
As for who is Christian movies catering to? First off it is sort of Catering Christian audiences, but not really. First and foremost, we can see how this plays out by saying Christians anything. Christian music, Christian lunch, etc. Lets get this straight, Christian is not a genera, it’s a way of life. Using the words Christian where there is a lot of secular gets controversial and the only thing Christians should apply is mainly to people. At the end of the day everything that is label is just for organization and its that its mainly supposed to be entertaining. But then again through music you can also see the light side of it in which if you like to read, I wrote about it here:
Now lets pick the sides, basically, you fall into one of the categories. I fall in to various categories for different movies. If its going to be an artistic movie done on a story that is worth seeing I would be enthusiastic. But if it’s going to be like God’s not dead, I’m going all separatist on this one.
I think we should at least be embracing for Christian movies and being wise for Christians or be happy with at least some elements in there and yet just stay cautious. My Christian Group at my School, Academy of Art University, the majority and the leader is in film making. They understand why. The leader, he is the most amazing, most concerning and the wisest Christian Ive ever met. He understands that Hollywood’ can’t sometimes go by the book. The material can be too stale and boring and there is not enough material to make a movie. He believe that we are at least getting some entertainment the Christian people.
For me, I’m not dumb to think every Christian movie is going to be perfect. I read an article, Christian movies are like Horror movies in early stages, they are in baby stages and it needs time to grow, before we actually see something good. I’m in hope because I looked and check for good movies. I’ve posted some on my forums,
and I’m also becoming an artist, so I’m constantly aware of the entertainment business. Don’t you remember the prince of Egypt? That was a beautiful movie by Dreamworks and it probably had the fewest of inconsistencies. And pretty much Veggie Tales touched our hearts. And it’s also we as the Christian Geeks we love stories like Kingdom Hearts and many video games that have great and emotional stories.
Video game can be comparable to Christian movie. Everyone hates the video game movies (What is your last name? Mario) but when going on YouTube, I’ve seen a lot of good Zelda ones such as Fistful of rupees or link to the future. Another is that trailer for a portal game. I’ve seen very good shorts for Christian content. And if someone really wants to work hard, Christian movie wouldn’t be stale cookie cutters. I’m reading and you like seeing matrix and star wars, but if its not just the Christian reason? You like it because it’s a story that you can actually relate to and nothing to really get made about. No stale stereotypes and nothing to cry about, no struggles or anything. Christian movies rarely build up anything to relate to the characters and at some point it become boring to look at it, because all the stuff from Hollywood is stuff into it. But, putting our minds to it and eventually getting stuff right, we can accomplish a lot can be done. Why not make something that is actually worth our time?
